Persistent sexual arousal syndrome or persistent genital arousal disorder is a condition that caused persistent and unwanted physical arousal without the presence of sexual thoughts or sexual desire. PSAS caused distress in women because the arousal sensation does not go away after one or several orgasms release. Having orgasm may provide temporary relief but the symptom does not diminished completely after orgasmic release.
This type of sexual disorder can affect both men and women. In women, this condition is referred to as PSAS and in men it is referred to as priapism. PSAS may be lifelong or acquired. Women with lifelong PSAS have this condition their entire life. Women who never have PSAS can also acquire the condition which may be triggered by surgery, certain prescribed medication, and emotional stress.
Persistent sexual arousal syndrome is a little known condition that was first diagnosed in 2001 and little is still known about the disorder. The arousal caused by the disorder has no relation to sexual excitement or sexual interest. PSAS may not be considered a rare condition as initially believed because more women from around the world have reported to have suffered from this condition.
PSAS affect women in all age group where the problem is characterized by genital arousal. Genital arousal is the result of vasocongestion where the vaginal tissues become engorges with blood and it is unknown as to what cause the condition to occur more frequently in women. Masturbating and sexual intercourse may help to relieve arousal sensation temporary but the problem does not go away. Women suffering from this condition may experience unwanted arousal that can last for hours or even days.
Most women who suffered from PSAS do not have any health related issues that could have caused the disorder. PSAS caused distress in women because the symptoms does not go away which can lead to shame, anger, embarrassment, confusion from lack of understanding, feelings of isolation, and problems in sexual relationship.
The distress can also affect a woman’s professional and social life if the condition is left untreated. Women with this condition need to admit she has sexual disorder and she needs to be able to communicate with her partner so she can get proper treatment and support.
It is unknown as to what caused PSAS, but the condition maybe triggered by pelvic injury, menopause, post menopause, hormone therapy, and emotional stress. There is no cure for PSAS, but antidepressant drugs may be used as a prevention to decrease the symptom. Antidepressant drugs may or may not work on certain individual because it may also have a counter affect that cause increase arousal sensation rather than decreasing affect.
Other prevention method may
also include the use of ice or topical cream to decrease arousal
sensation by reducing blood flow to the genital area. Massage and
stretching exercises may also help to reduced arousal sensation and
provide some reliefs.
