Many rape survivors suffer from long-lasting emotional effects recovering from rape aftermath. Most rape victims suffer from physical violation and psychological trauma that may last for years.
Many rape victims experience feelings of shame and guilt because they believed they are responsible for the rape and for failing to prevent unwanted force sexual activity from occurring. Another reason for feeling of shame and guilt is they may have responded physically to the point of orgasm and many victims find this feeling to be more upsetting than the physical and psychological trauma caused by rape.
Victims recovering from rape aftermath may suffer from physical symptoms that include headaches, nausea, gastrointestinal problems, genital injuries, and sleep disorder. For some the symptoms may last for short period of time and for others the symptoms may last for years.
It is also common for rape survivors to experience feeling of anxiety instead of arousal during sexual activity because they tend to associate sexual activity with psychological trauma they experienced during the assault.
Some victims may suffer from posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD) which is a long-term anxiety disorder that develops after exposure to physical or psychological traumatic event following rape or attempted rape. Victims suffering from PTSD may experience depression, nightmares, anxiety, and feelings of extreme vulnerability.
Victims recovering from rape aftermath may find support from counseling to be helpful dealing with trauma following rape. Most rape survivors discovered that by talking about the assault they are able to gain control over their painful feelings and allows them to begin the healing process. Research indicates rape victims who receive help sooner experience less severe emotional effects than those who seek help later.
Women who have been raped should report to the police right away and avoid taking bath or changing clothes. There may be evidence such as semen or hair on clothing that can be used to identify the rapist. Providing as much information regarding the rapist characteristics, voice, clothes, height, racial background or any details that can be used to identify the rapist would be helpful. Get help as soon as possible by contacting rape crisis center to get general counseling and other effective treatment program to help deal with your trauma.
Just remember that if you are a victim of rape it is not your
fault and you are not to be blame for the rape. The crime has been
committed by the rapist and the crime has been committed on you.
